Beautiful Chaos curated and produced by Tiffany Street
About this event
“Everything has two aspects: the current aspect, which we see nearly always and which ordinary men can see, and the ghostly and metaphysical aspect, which only rare individuals may see in moments of clairvoyance… A work of art must narrate something that does not appear within its outline.”—Giorgio de Chirico
Exhibition Brief
Beautiful Chaos is an exhibition of young emerging artists from both San Diego and other areas of the country who critically comment on the state of our cultural landscape, synthesizing their topical commentaries with surreal, disorienting and other-worldly text and imagery. Artists included in the exhibition come from the San Diego region along with Los Angeles, Portland, Austin, Las Vegas and New York City. Included artists are Malicia Domino, Optimus Volts, Eye Gato, Nicholas Danger, Fluidtoons, Manaz Mostamandy Raiszadeh, Saul Ciggaroa, 0h10 M1ke, Mara Appel Des Lauriers, Lucky, Lala, Davie Slowhands, Nick Branfield and URL.
Their works’ bold and visually compelling content speaks on the turmoil of the past year, bringing viewers face-to-face with what we often push into our subconscious minds. Much of the work brings to mind the surrealist movement where artists such as Dalí, Man Ray, Khalo and de Chirico (among others) showed us what they were able to see lying beneath the surface.
Like these legendary artists, the artists in this exhibition don’t contain chaos: they instead choose to unearth, interpret and beautifully present their findings. Through their acts, we see things in a new light. And thus, we use art to disrupt the chaos.
